Margaret Franklin Haynes
Margaret Franklin Haynes, 90, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, after a brief illness. Born in Leesville in 1918, she received two education degrees from LSU and did graduate work at several other American universities including Bennington, Middlebury, Georgetown and Michigan, as well as the American Academy in Rome, the University of Siena, Italy, and the University of Warsaw, Poland. She spent most of her life as a teacher and as a resident of Baton Rouge. Margaret gave much of herself to others, teaching basic skills in Operation Head Start in the 1960s, English in the Vietnamese community in the 1970s, and Italian in the evening at LSU in the 1980s.

She was a Fulbright scholar in Novara, Italy, and Konya, Turkey, and, during the Cold War, taught in the Soviet Union and at the U.S. Air Force High School in Ankara. She will be best remembered by generations of high school Latin students whom she taught at Istrouma, Broadmoor, Tara and Bishop Sullivan High Schools in Baton Rouge. At age 78, Margaret completed a second master's degree at Loyola of New Orleans in religious studies, after which she often led nondenominational services in the Nursing Care Center at St. James Place, where she resided from 1983 to 2005. She belonged to St. Aloysius Parish, Delta Kappa Gamma and the AAUW, and was a lifetime member of the American Classical League. Margaret spent her last years living with family outside Rolla, Mo. Her home overlooked a clear Ozark spring that she deeply enjoyed. Preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Davis and Magnolia McManus Franklin, who were of Leesville; and a brother, Benjamin, who was of Birmingham, Ala. Survived by a sister, Vira Eagles, of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; daughter, Helen Haynes Lambert, of Cambridge, Mass.; son, William "Lance" Haynes, of Rolla; four grandchildren, Robert and Suzanne Lambert and Stuart and Courtney Haynes; four great-grandchildren, Kevin and Henry Chao and Margo and Cory Haynes; and niece, Ginger Eagles. She was especially thankful for the attentions and kindnesses of old friends and former students around the world, particularly for those of Roland Eagles, Sam B. Haynes Jr. and Kit Smoot. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible memorial contributions may be sent to a fund encouraging teachers of Latin, the Margaret Franklin Haynes Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o the American Classical League, 422 Wells Mill Drive, Oxford, OH 45056. Mrs. Haynes's last words were "Live it up."
