Herman Baugh

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. Herman Crawford Baugh, 91, passed away January 19, 2009, in Birmingham, Ala., where he resided since 2001.
He was born November 7, 1917, in Lula, the son of the late Arthur Herman and Zadie Church Baugh. After his mother died in the Flu Epidemic of 1918, he was reared by his grandmother, Mary A. Cagle Baugh in the New Holland Community of Gainesville, GA. Mr. Baugh was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force during World War II and was stationed in China with The Flying Tigers. He also served in the Korean War until he was discharged, at which time he remained in the Reserves. After graduation from the University of Georgia, he taught in Hall County, Military Dependants School in Turkey for two years, and later in Athens, and Lexington. After retiring from teaching, he was activated in the military and served several years as a chaplain's assistant at several bases. Mr. Baugh retired as a Sr. Master Sergeant with 24 years service.
As a civilian, he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at New Holland, Oconee Heights and East Athens Baptist churches. He was a member of the East Athens Civitan Club and of the Golden K. Kiwanis Club in Oxford. He attended Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Oxford until he moved to Birmingham.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Baugh; and brothers, Elmer, Arthur Jr. and Hoyt Baugh.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Seagraves Baugh; sisters, Pauline B. Boddie, Guntersville, Ala. and Joyce Hughes, Laurel, Miss.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 21, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens with the Revs. Mike Boatfield and Don Leaptrott officiating. Burial was in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tom Patton, William Adams, David Seagraves, Donnie Seagraves.
Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, was in charge of arrangements.
